  • Each year more than 10,000 young people in the United States are killed and 40,000 injured in alcohol-related automobile accidents. (The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry)
  • Alcohol use among young people starts early and increases rapidly with age.  According to an annual survey, 3/4 of 12th graders and more than 2/3 of 10th graders and 8th graders have consumed alcohol. (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2006).
  • One out of every two 8th graders has tried alcohol. Additionally, more kids use alcohol than use tobacco or illicit drugs and more children are killed by alcohol than all illegal drugs combined. (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration)
  • In Tennessee, an estimated 115,000 individuals between the ages of 12 and 25 are addicted to alcohol or have an alcohol abuse problem.  (US NO DRUGS.com)
  • On average, 226,000 Tennesseans between the ages of 12 and 25 binge drink every month.

  • 70% of 8th graders perceive alcoholic beverages as “fairly easy” or “very easy” to get.  By the time they have completed high school, nearly 80% of teenagers have consumed alcohol.  (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism)
  • Underage drinking has a troubling range of negative consequences.  Alcohol is associated with academic failure and drug use.  Alcohol also plays a powerful role in risky sexual behavior, including unwanted, unintended and unprotected sex.  (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism)
  • Data has shown that drinking early in life can increase a person’s risk of developing an alcohol use disorder at some time during the life span.

  • 96% of adults said it is unacceptable for another parent or other adult to provide alcohol to their teenager without their permission.  (The Century Council)
  • 78% of U.S. adults believe there should be legal consequences for adults who host parties where people under 21 are allowed to consume alcohol.
